King of the Schoolyard

12:45 PM 0 Comments
In honor of my baby turning 20...egads, I no longer have teenagers! How did that happen? Anyway, lol...I wanted to share another story from my upcoming book, Apo's Army

King of the Schoolyard

When we were young, we all knew that being King of the Hill was the highest honor that there was on the school’s playground. Whoever was king got to walk at the front of the line wherever we went. They decided which games we played at lunch. They were the unspoken ruler of our class.

Regal was just a small kitten when he started going to school. Like most kittens, he would watch the recess competitions to see who would win. King of the Hill didn’t happen every recess. It only happened a few times during the year, so whoever won would be king for at least three months. It was a very big deal at our school.

Every time there was a challenge, Regal would be there watching. He really wanted to be king, but you had to be at least a third grader before you were allowed. Third graders never won though. It was almost always a fifth grader. Regal didn’t care though. He practiced whenever he had a chance. Unless there was a competition happening, the hill was empty. Every recess we would watch Regal running up and down it. To become king, you had to be the first cat up the hill.

Regal did this for over a year. He grew bigger and all of the practicing made him really fast. He was so fast that he was the first kitten chosen to be for any race. As soon as someone yelled go, he’d be the first kitten off of the starting line. It didn’t matter if it was a regular race or one that had hurdles. He would fly down the track and always came in first.

When he was in third grade, he knew that it would be his chance to be king. He’d trained for it. He’d worked so hard. He knew that he was ready and that he could win. He just had to wait for lunchtime. The morning seemed to go on forever. He had a hard time paying attention during math and instead was doodling pictures of him running up a big hill. Lunchtime was even harder.  He didn’t want to eat the turkey and gravy that the cafeteria was serving. He just wanted to get outside to race up that giant hill.

As soon as the bell rang to release us from the lunchroom, Regal was the first of us out the door. He ran right to the bottom of the hill and started stretching. Tons of other kittens joined him. A few of us climbed up the hill so that we could judge who made it to the top first. Then, once everyone was in place, a whistle was blown, and the kittens were off!

Some raced as fast as they could, but then slowed down about halfway up the hill. Others took off slowly and actually passed those who slowed down. But, where was Regal? At first we didn’t see him. Then, as the crowd thinned out, we saw him. He had passed those who gave up halfway up and was passing those who had taken off slowly at first. He was already almost to the top!

Then, just as we were all sure that Regal was going to win, a grey cat named Swiffer ran right past him and up to the top! Swiffer was a fifth grader and had won King of the Hill the year before. When Regal got to the top, he was disappointed to see Swiffer there, but still clapped and cheered for him. When I talked to him later, he said there would always be more races and he wasn’t going to give up.

Except Regal didn’t win any of the races that year. Swiffer won every single one of them. We all thought for sure that Regal would give up, but he never did. He kept training and he kept racing. The next year, he was right there at the front of the pack when the whistle blew.

He took his time getting up the hardest part of the hill. Once he got past that though, he took off so fast! He was a cream blur as he ran past the other kittens. As he got to the top, he almost ran right past us and back down the other side but came to a sliding stop just in time. Everyone clapped and cheered for him. He had worked hard and now was king!

In fact, he was the longest reigning king. He was king for all of fourth grade and all of fifth grade. Nobody really minded though because he was always super nice. He listened to everyone and when he had to make a decision, he always thought about what everyone wanted to do. He may be the greatest king that we ever had at our school.

Now that we’re all much older, a lot of us still live near the school. Regal is now in charge of all of us who live in the area and I like to think that he’s such a good leader because of the kind of king of the hill he was all those years ago. Sometimes we sit around and we talk about those days, but mostly Regal is always looking for ways to make our lives better now.

2017 in Review

8:34 PM 0 Comments
2017 is almost gone. Can you believe it? I know that I can't. It seems like just last week we were watching the ball drop and then the boys and I went back to playing games for a while before I chased them off to bed. But, here we are and since it's been a pretty big year around here, I thought that it was the perfect time for a year in review post. Positive things only because I don't think it's healthy for any of us to dwell on the negatives...just take what you can from them and move on. It's all any of us can do and remain (mostly) sane.

So, how did we do? Read on to find out!

Roger -
This kid had a pretty huge year. Back in the Spring, he was chosen not only for the Thornapple Jazz Festival All Star band, but also for the District 10 MSBOA All Star Jazz band. As if that wasn't enough, as soon as school was out, he attended the Aquinas Jazz camp and followed it up by leaving for Dominica less than 36 hours later. We both want to say thank you to those who helped get him there. It was an expensive trip and he couldn't have done it without his sponsors. While there, he helped remove fishing line from the coral reefs, went scuba diving, and studied invasive species which included catching and measuring tiny lizards and all sorts of things. It was an amazing experience for him and he still talks about it!

Since he's been back, he hasn't exactly rested on his laurels. He now has a job working at the local movie theatre, is an officer in Business Professionals of America, and is an honor student. As if that wasn't enough, he was/is leadership in his high school band and helped out a lot with marching band. Jazz season is upon us now and he's lead tenor in the high school jazz band. Perhaps most exciting for this Fall was his auditioning and being chosen to play with the Kalamazoo Youth Jazz Orchestra. Needless to say, he's one busy kid and this mom is a tiny bit relieved that he'll have his driver's license soon.

Ben -

Not one to let his brother look busier than him, Ben dove into working with the high school varsity teams again this year. He started the year with his second year of managing the varsity boys basketball team. It wasn't the most stellar of seasons, but his work running the camera for all of their games was highly praised. As soon as basketball wrapped for the year, he jumped right into working with the baseball team. It was a lot of hiking to the field, but he made some really good friends who helped out with rides and really enjoyed being outside and wearing the "infamous" duck hat. You'll have to ask him about that...lol

Summer came and found Ben working out at the YMCA summer camp, helping out in their kitchens. He really enjoyed it and learned some great skills that he can continue to hone. Once school came around again, Ben started his senior year. Yep, this kid is graduating this year! He worked hard with the football team, joined the Key Club, and helps out wherever he can. On top of that, he got to attend two Michigan State football games to cheer on his Spartans. We're back in the swing of basketball season and if he's not behind the camera, he's at practice encouraging the guys to work hard and to rebound.

Katrina -
As for me, I'm tired just writing about everything my boys did this past year. I know that I probably missed a few things too! As Ben says, "in all my free time", I was blessed to work with Nick and we published not one, but two books. Nick is an amazing storyteller and I am truly honored that he invited me into a universe that he created and said, "Here, it's yours now. Have fun." I'm incredibly proud of The Tether : None Good and The Tether : Except One.

While most of my time belongs to getting the boys where they need to be or attending their events, I have also written a supplemental "novella" to go alongside books 1 and 2. In fact, with any luck, I'll be sending it off to Nick tonight for him to check out and to give me feedback on. I have some ideas for it that I'm hoping our readers will really like.

Looking back at 2017, my year doesn't look nearly as impressive as my boys, but knowing that I'm a big part of their years makes it all worth it. I'm looking forward to another "action packed" year. There will be more sports, more jazz, and more books and I'm thankful that I get to share those moments with all of you.

Kids...They Grow Up Fast

1:33 PM 0 Comments
This past Saturday was a long one. Roger and I were up at 5am so that we could join his high school steel drum band at a festival for the day. The festival was pretty awesome and I'll share a link to the mass band performance at the end of this post, but that isn't what I want to talk about...I'm going to sit here and I'm just going to write about being a mom.

For the longest time, mom has been my primary title. It's been my world and my life. Those two boys have been my world and my life. It's only been in the past little while that I've started thinking about what I'm going to do when they're gone and living their own lives. I still don't really know but I am thinking about it.

On Saturday, I had expectations. I expected that this was an event that Roger and I were doing together. Except, the event really wasn't what either of us had figured it was. So, instead of spending the day with me, he spent it with his band and with his friends. He did pretty much everything with them. He sat with them. He had lunch with them. Since this wasn't my usual group of band kids, I wasn't invited to join them. I ate lunch alone. I sat in the bleachers alone. I watched them laughing and inside, a part of me hurt. I was happy he was having a great time, but it still hurt that I was on the outside looking in.

Still, there were those moments where he was completely my boy...he ran over to me to make sure it was okay that he spent $5 of the money we'd set aside for his band trip. During the concert, he was sitting on the opposite side of the gym from me and I realized that we were sitting in the exact same position. He'd make faces at me from across the room and I couldn't help but smile.

What's the point of all this you ask? Just that Sunday, after his dad had picked him up, I was sitting there thinking about the weekend and I realized something. The very fact that he was confident and comfortable enough to not need me on Saturday meant that I had done my job. He may not know how to sew a button back on but he's learned the skills that will help him become the man that he wants to be and the fact that he'll still make goofy faces at me from across the room means that no matter how old he gets, he won't forget he's my kid. With that realization, I was filled with peace and that, my friends, is a very good thing indeed.

If you'd like to check out the mass band performance, check out this video!

If you'd like to hear the HHS Steel performance, head on over to my YouTube channel where it's almost all kids, all the time.

Send Roger to Sea

4:49 PM 0 Comments
If you're friends with me on Facebook, you probably recognize the image to the left. It's the incredible design that was made for us by Nick Davis of Alt-World Studios. I bet some of you even know why I asked him to make it for us. I'm writing here today for those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about though...

If you've been around for a while, you know that I have two boys. Today, I want to tell you about my youngest. His name is Roger and he's 15 years old. He's also a musician and an honors student. As part of his science honors courses, he was invited to go on a science research trip to Dominica next summer. It's one of those amazing once in a life time opportunities. Sadly, it also comes with an amazing price tag. One that I've told him that I will help him find a way to pay.

You see, I wasn't given many opportunities when I was his age and I know the value of a trip like this. It's his chance to explore the world, to learn about a region about as different from here as you can get. It will give him an opportunity to work in a scientific environment with people of all different nationalities. If we want to get practical, it will look incredibly good on college resumes. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity that not everyone gets to have but it's here in front of us and I want to make it happen for him.

Working Hard During Summerfest
Most of you know that right now I'm not capable of working outside of the house. That doesn't mean that I don't work..I do. I work for a friend of mine writing tweets for companies every week. The pay helps keep gas in the car but it's certainly not enough to cover something like this and as his mom, I'm willing to do what I can to help him make his dream come true.

I say help him because whenever he can, he takes his tenor sax into town and plays outside of restaurants. If you follow me on Instagram, you may have noticed my #SaxOnTheStreets photos. Those are all of him doing what he does. People have been great about throwing a dollar or two into his case, but it just isn't enough.

Here's where I'm hoping you can come in. He has set up a GoFundMe at www.sendrogertosea.com as part of our efforts. Some friends have donated some great reward tiers so it's not "money for nothing." You will get something in return...an awesome reward and our undying gratitude. He also has shirts and other items for sale over at TeePublic and gets a small amount for each item sold. If you're at all local to Hastings, MI or the surrounding area, he has an ongoing can drive going.

We're not giving up until this is paid for...but it would be a lot easier if folks would help out by donating (a direct donation can be made via PayPal to close2midnight at gmail.com) or spreading the word. The more eyes that get on things, the easier it is.

Thanks guys for reading and for helping a mama out!

Aloha Island Lei

8:41 PM 0 Comments
About a month ago, I received an email from Aloha Island Lei with a review request. My first reaction was to chuckle. What was I going to do with a lei all the way over here in Michigan? Knowing though, that people would be getting married or having fun summer parties, I said sure, what the heck? Today, out of the blue, a long box appeared on my front porch. Opening it, I was amazed to find not one, but two gorgeous fresh flower leis.

I apologize for not taking pictures of the packaging, but I was far too eager to get them unwrapped! They smelled absolutely amazing and I couldn't wait to see them. I wasn't disappointed! These are beautifully made, smell delicious and are absolutely beautiful. Don't believe me? Check out this picture where I forced the boys to wear them and stand on the front porch..hehe...

Don't they look handsome?
What amazed me the most...other than the fact that I got them to do this for me? These came all the way from Hawaii and still looked this good! You'd have thought I'd picked them up on the island and snapped the picture within minutes! Honestly, if I ever get the chance to have a lovely beach themed party, I'm going to want one of these around my neck and the necks of my guests!

If you'd like some gorgeous flowered leis of your own, check out Aloha Island Lei! I've been very impressed and hopefully you will be too! Now, just for fun...my boys being all summer stylin'!

The Front Seat

12:20 AM 0 Comments
It's officially winter here in Michigan and with winter comes such morning joys as frozen doors on the car. Last weekend, this happened to me. It didn't bother me too much because I only had Roger here and he's had a habit for a while of climbing over my seat to get into his in the middle of the van. So, not worrying about it, we loaded off and went into town to go to the store.

While at the store, it suddenly occurred to me that we were buying things that needed to go into the back of the van. What if that door were frozen shut? Well, I could probably get the middle door open if I fought with it enough. Wait, where would Roger sit then? I guess I could make an exception and let him ride up front this one time. After all, he's not old enough to sit in the front seat. I'd always told the boys that they had to be at least 12 or 13 for that...Wait...oh merciful heavens, my youngest child, my baby was now old enough to sit in the front seat.

Yes, that entire thought processed raced through my mind and I had a minor panic attack that my babies were growing up. Luckily, the back door opened and I never had to deal with the reality of him actually sitting next to me and not behind me in the van. Whew! One realization at a time, thank you very much!

So, I have to ask..How old were your kids when you first let them sit in the front seat? Did it make your parent heart twinge a little to see them growing up?

(almost) Wordless Wednesday

11:41 PM 0 Comments

Last week was our 2nd annual camping trip. I have to say that it was yet another fantastic time. With my life being so up in the air sometimes, it's just plain wonderful to have something that you just know is going to be amazing. Honestly, I'm already looking forward to next year's trip and that time spent with my family. Those that I consider family are a rather small group but I cannot imagine my life without them and any time that I get to take my boys and share new places with them is the highlight of any period of time.  Here are a few of the pictures that I took while we were gone:

He's growing up so fast. Every time I look at him, I see more young man and less little boy. Sometimes I wish he'd just slow down a little bit but all the time, I'm incredibly proud of the young man he's becoming.

(almost) Wordless Wednesday

4:13 PM 2 Comments
Midweek and life hasn't slowed down any. I had my show today and also got the kids bathed and laundry going at the same time. The boys and I are doing pretty good on keeping up with our daily chore list so I'm really happy and proud about that. Yesterday, I also surprised them and we went into Lansing and saw Percy Jackson & The Lightning Thief. The one local theatre company runs $1 movie specials during the summer so we took advantage of that. While we all agree that the movie is good and worth getting for our collection, we also agree that the books are way, way better.

So, that brings us to this week's photo. The theme over on Sunday Shutterbugs for this week is Long and I think we found just the picture!

Roger modeling the grass

This is our backyard. Ok, the picture is really misleading. This is a small section of our backyard. This year, we had the bad combination of no lawn mower, lots of rain, grass/weeds grow far too fast and then battery powered lawnmower.  It allowed our grass in the back to completely get out of control. Every dry day, I've been out there, hacking it down with the lawnmower.  We are now down to a very small segment that should be gone by tomorrow.

(almost) Wordless Wednesday

1:46 PM 3 Comments
Last weekend, Roger was here and we had a wonderful time together. Like any mom, I did manage to get a few pictures taken of the things we did and I wanted to share them with you. Now, over on Sunday Shutterbugs, the theme for this week was squares. As you can see, I guess I was hoping that it would be circles. For me, this time of year is all about circles. There are apples and pumpkins and ok, well that's all that's coming to mind but I'm sure there are other things too. *grins*

So, here are our weekend activities. I just love that he loves doing this kind of thing with me.

Milk Jug Birdfeeder
This is the bird feeder that we made together. It's now hanging outside on our trellice thing a ma bob (yes that's the technical term.) filled with homemade bird food.

Halloween Pumpkins
And here are our pumpkins. I did the one on the bottom and Roger did the one on the top. We call his Mr Scary Pumpkin Man. His shirt says I love Candy and I think he's saying something like Give me candy. Mine is just carrying a candy basket. I can't wait until Ben and I do his this coming weekend.

Finish It Friday

4:51 PM 1 Comments
Wow, it's Friday and all I want is a nap! I was up too late last night and up too early this morning, but sometimes that's just how it goes. I have Roger here with me this weekend and we're already having a great time together. We went to the grocery store and picked up some pumpkins. When we got back, we drew faces on the pumpkins and put them on our front steps. We've done Legos and watched tv together and just really enjoyed our time together.

So, what did I actually finish? Well, I finished a week of working around the house and I'm enjoying time with my baby. Ok, I s'pose that's technically cheating, but sometimes that's how a Friday goes. The boys had a half day of school so I was out of here at 11 to pick them up. Since then, I've been having fun with him, so there we go. Now, I need to sign off because we have some delicious chili on the stove waiting for us. Happy weekend all!

Before I get into the story that goes along with my picture, I just wanted to mention a new photo challenge group that I know of. Edie and Corinna have launched a new blog called Sunday Shutterbugs. Each Sunday, they will each post a picture that they took that day/week. They're both very good photographers. In fact, if I ever get married again, I want Edie to do the wedding photos. Anyway, they're inviting all of us to also post a link to a photo that we've taken. So, this week, I'll be posting this photo...

Meet Vegas

Now for those of you who have followed my photo stream over on Flickr, you know this handsome lad is Vegas. Vegas came to us from England and he is a very well loved member of our family. So loved, in fact, that Roger insists on taking him back and forth between his Dad's place and mine, even though Vegas actually belongs to me. Not only that, but he was going back and forth to school with Roger every day and even going outside at recess! That's where Vegas had a pretty big adventure. It seems Roger and one of his friends were playing with Vegas and somehow he got thrown onto the roof of the school! Oh my...I told the boys that monkies can't really fly... Anyway, it seems he spent 2 days (including an overnight!) up on that roof and of course it rained. Poor monkey. I'm sure he was thrilled when someone finally rescued him. Of course, then he had to take a bath and we all know that monkies do not like the washing machine. Vegas didn't escape unscathed, I'm sorry to say. His one eye is now scratched and his shirt will never look clean again. Roger and Vegas are still the best of friends, but Vegas has retired from the adventure circuit for now...

Happy Birthday, Roger!

1:03 AM 2 Comments
Mom, I'm going to eat this frosting.

Happy Birthday, to my baby! It's hard to believe that 8 years ago today, I was in the hospital being induced for this guy. After dilating, going backwards and getting there again and a mere 20 minutes of pushing (yes, you can be envious but after the pregnancies "easy deliveries" are good), Pirate Roger came into the world. Most kids come out crying. According to my Doctor, Roger sounded like a pirate. My 9lb 9.5oz 38 weeker is 8 years old now. 8 years old, 2nd grade...man, they grow up so fast! Mommy misses you buddy, but I sure hope you and your brother like your present when it gets there.
