The Good:

Another quick moving section and as a reader, I could start to see the story itself starting to come together. The girls are still very much individuals and dealing with their own insecurities and issues while trying to figure out what's going on. It can be hard not to have characters blend into one another so I appreciate their differences.

I fell in love with this cover as soon as I saw it. How could I not? It's absolutely gorgeous and reminds me of The Tether Saga book covers. I know you're not supposed to judge a book by its cover,but it's this cover that had me approaching the author. Luckily, she said sure and here we are!

Have you ever really wanted to love a book but you just can't? Sadly, this was that book for me.  The story was cute, but a little too Princess Diaries for me. The characters seemed to feel flat and I just couldn't connect to them. There just wasn't anything about them that made them unique or made them stand out. Daniel and Madison didn't really seem to connect for me as a couple. I can see them as being close friends, but a couple? Not so much. There's also scenes towards the end of the book among two couples that just felt wedged in. The entire book was pg and then suddenly, there was a whole lot more implied.

I'm going to give this one a 3 out of 5. I didn't hate it, but it isn't one that I'll go flipping frantically through my Kindle to track down to read again later.

Sometimes you're handed a book and it turns out to be nothing like you were expecting. That's what happened to me with Daughters of Arkham. For some reason, I was expecting something a bit more Batman related. I blame that on the fact that when I think Arkham, I think Arkham Asylum and that I picked this book up from the author at a convention. My brain was firmly in comic mode.

This book is not that. It's a very well written Young Adult horror novel. So well written that as someone who doesn't do a lot in the horror genre couldn't put it down. I was picking it up every opportunity I had. While the main characters may be teenagers, the authors took the time to really develop them so that you form a connection with them as a reader. There is just enough detail in every scene that you can see it in your head and that ending...woo boy...I need to get in touch with them about book 2 soon!

Another of the books that I snagged from the free shelf at the airport and another one that was perfect for me to read when I spotted it...

The Good:
This book is such an amazingly easy read and though the author has a reputation of being a horror writer, this book isn't horror. I'm the biggest chicken in the world and nothing in this book even gave me a shiver. What it did give me was the joy in watching a teenager grow up and come a bit more into herself as the book progressed. It gave me a ghost story that was set in the present, but had its start in the past. I'm a history junkie and while this part was totally made up, I really enjoyed the historical aspects of the book.

The Bad:
If I had one complaint, and it's a small one, it's that not all of the french in the book is translated. Still, this was so minor and it didn't take away from the reading itself so I'm nitpicking.

The Summary:
This is another light reading book. It isn't a heavy mystery or a scary horror novel. It's a fun book geared towards the teenage set. Some have complained that the main character is a snobby bitch and that it gives girls the wrong impressions about fat girls, nice girls, and the lot, but the reality is that I have seen groups of girls made up of exactly the group depicted within this book. Is it always the case? Nope. Still it exists and Collette has to learn that fashion sense, the latest boy, and all of that doesn't define a person.

If you like light reading in this genre, I suggest you give this book a shot.

I'm not going to lie. I've had this book waiting around to be reviewed for a few years now. Somehow, in one of the fits of organizing, it got laid to the side and was only recently rediscovered. Once I found it, I had to dive right in. Here's what I discovered:

While the book had a bit of a slow start for me, once I really got into it, it was a great read. It's the story of a mother's love for her child and of a child coming into their own. Elissa's struggles, while set in the realm of being a superhero, are ones that most of us can relate to and remember going through. Some of us are still struggling to discover ourselves. As for her mom, I can relate as I watch my own boys grow up and have to step back sometimes and let them discover things for themselves.

Unfortunately, I have some bad news for all of you out there. While I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves super heroes, has children, knows people who have children, etc, this book appears to be out of print. Amazon has 2 copies being sold in their used section. I also couldn't find a website for the author. There is an email address in the front cover of the book so hopefully when I contact him, I can get some more information. If I do, I promise to report back!

A couple of weeks ago, I attended MeggaCon in Jackson, Michigan and I happened to meet the artist on this series of books. It just so happens that he's also married to the author! When he asked if I'd be interested in checking out their series of young adult books, I didn't even consider saying no.
With everything going on in my life right now, this book was just what I needed. Filled with great characters, great adventure, and great writing, I didn't want to put it down. If I had one gripe, it's that there were grammatical errors throughout the book. They probably wouldn't be anything that most people would notice, and certainly not the young adult set that this book was meant for. It's just that they jumped out at my editor's eye and you know me, I have to mention that sort of thing.

Now, for the realllllly good parts. This book is the first in a series and I'm going to be lucky enough to be seeing these fine folks again at another convention very soon so fingers crossed I come back with the other books to share with you!

Poisons...antidotes...Seriously action packed and a book that I couldn't put down. I loved every single segment of this series and I honestly can't wait to convince the boys that they ought to give it a try. Granted, they're not the readers that their mom is but I do manage to sneak one their way from time to time. My advice to all of my readers? Don't let the fact that this book is geared towards the young adult crowd stop you from picking it up. Adults and young adults are going to love this book and I wouldn't be surprised at all if it's already on the Amazon top 100 or even top 10 list for this category. 

As for me, I'm thrilled to have found a new writer that I'm going to be watching for in the future!

Sometimes I think that books come in and across my desk in groups. Sometimes, it's cookbook, other times it's fantasy and right now, there seems to be quite a few in the young adult category. When I started reading this series (this is book 3), I wasn't sure what to expect. You have a teenager girl who seems to manage to get into all sorts of trouble without even meaning to. The books are filled with pretty much every type of person that you have ever met and your feelings regarding them may change as the books progress. I know that mine did. I would say that I would suggest these books to my boys, but they're still in that weird "omg, the main character is a girl, no way" stage. I don't get it, but I'm not a boy either.

More young adult fiction! I wish that I could say that I enjoyed this one as much as the others that I've reviewed recently, but I just can't. While the story itself is good and kept me reading, this wasn't a book that I had a hard time putting down when I needed to go and do something else. Also, I really felt that it wasn't always entirely accurate in its portrayals of the Amish community. I'd say more, but then I'd be dipping into spoilers territory so I really don't want to do that. Overall, I'd say the story is cute and perfect for the young adult/tween set, but just not totally my cup of tea.

Young Adult books aren't usually something that come across my desk, but when they do, I'm sure to make sure they get read because I'm always looking for good books to try to entice my teens to read. This is one that I'm sure they'd enjoy. It's funny, serious and entirely relatable. It has sports, family life and life lessons. It took very little effort for me to see this story unfolding in my head and the writing flowed in such a way that it was a very easy and enjoyable read. I'd say it's perfect for the middle school to high school set and heck, maybe a few parents along the way.
