Every so often, you get something kind of spectacularly cool. In this case, I received the very first copy of the very first print run of a book. Then, every so often, life gets in the way and you have to shelve it for a couple of weeks before you get to read it. That was the case with this book. Then, I had an entire day where I just refused to do anything. The oldest and I caught up on some tv and then while he was watching some Netflix, I picked up this book...

The Good - So many books have been written about time travel and gritty police drama, but somehow this one managed to come at it from a new direction. There are bits of sci-fi, bits of noir, and lots of adventure packed into one 222 page book. The characters have a good level of development and while the book takes place far into the future, there wasn't anything so "unbelievable" that you went hey, wait a second....In fact, I found the futuristic setting to have a realistic feel to it that allowed me to sink into it and keep reading.

The Bad - This author badly needed to get his hands on a good proofreader/editor. While his story is great, his grasp of commas just isn't. While the author had manually made corrections in this edition of the book, there were so many more that needed to be made. I also spotted two times where the author had put the wrong name.

The Summary - Great book that I won't hesitate to recommend, so long as comma misplacement doesn't bother you. I get paid to find these things so I know that they jump out at me more than they might the average reader. I'm also thrilled that this was written in such a way that it's clear that it's book one of a series.  I'm eager to get my fingers on book 2 once it's released.  This book and hopefully future books will have a spot on my bookshelves for sure. When I picked up this book, I had no idea what to expect. I'd recently finished Mr. Melton's "Follow That Mouse" and while I enjoyed it, this book didn't seem to be of the same type of book. Guess what! It wasn't!

I can't recall when or if I've ever read a book that was futuristic but at the same time wasn't filled with advanced technology. It was really interesting to see how people were living without the modern technology that we so often take for granted. It made me chuckle to think about how people get on me about how many cookbooks I have when everything is available online. In this book, there was no internet. I guess I'd be doing a bit better than some, huh?

If I have one complaint about this book, it's the ending. I don't want to give anything away so I'll just say that it felt a bit forced. Other than that, the character development felt honest and seeing some people turn to bad while others did what they could to help others felt real. It wasn't until I reached the end of the book that I discovered that this was actually book two in the series. I'm going to be looking for the other books in this series so I can let you guys know if you should pick up just this one or the whole set!

As for this book, I can say... Yes! If you come across this book, pick it up and check it out! I don't think you'll regret it.

If you recall, I've reviewed a couple of other books by Henry Melton and I pointed out that he was better suited writing full novels versus short stories. It turns out that I was right! In my first foray into his full length novels, I was pleased to discover that not only did this book hold my attention, it had me picking it up every time I tried to put it down.

This book is a great blend of small town, sci-fi, and fantasy. I loved the aspects of magic mixed with science. When I finished it, my first thought was to wonder whether or not there had been a sequel written to this book. Unfortunately, I didn't find anything that indicated that there was. So, I guess you'll just have to read this one and if you enjoy it, write the author some fan mail asking him to tell all of us what happens next!

You be the judge...famous last words? Nah..nothing quite that dramatic. I met the author at an indie comic convention a couple of weeks ago and picked up this book for some hotel reading. Bonus for me, dinner plans came up so I didn't get a chance to read it at the hotel. Next bonus for me? I did get some extra reading time over the weekend and had this on hand.

Let's start with the good... the stories are enjoyable and easy to read. In fact, this is one of those books that you intend to sit down and a few minutes later, you find yourself picking it back up again.

The bad - The stories read more as if they're prequels to full length pieces. For someone who likes some closure to their stories, this can become very frustrating. Also, while it's nice to be able to envision as scene in your head, there is such a thing as too much description and this author tends to cozy up to that line quite a bit. He doesn't stop over, but he gets close.

The Summary - I know I listed more bad then good, but at the end of the day, I would happily recommend this book to anyone who loves SciFi, fantasy, and just a great quick and easy read. My bad only out weighs the good because I wanted more from each and every story. With any lucky, the author will decide to expand on the stories and create at least novellas for each of them. With even more luck, he'll also decide to let me review his other works so I can let you know how they stack up against this one.

What can I say about this book that I didn't say about Mr. Martin's other two books? Yet again, he's written a superhero story that captured my attention from page one and didn't let go until the story was told. This book did feel as if it had a darker tone and unlike his other books, this one really wrapped up the entire story in one package and when I closed the cover, I wasn't left wondering what happened next. I knew. The author wrapped it all up in a bow and I really felt as if this book was a gift for my shelf. Sadly, this is the last book that he wrote, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he finds his muse and writes more soon!

As promised, I'm back with the review for Volume 2! I am thrilled to say that this one is far better than volume 1. Where volume 1 was filled with what felt like unfinished stories, volume 2 is filled with completed ones. In fact, of the thirteen or so stories, I think there was only one or two that didn't feel finished. I have to say that my favorite story in this volume was The Manta. It was quite a bit longer than the other stories, but it really felt fully fleshed out. This book is filled with stories of the bizarre, stories that you want to lose yourself in, and some that are just plain interesting.

While I'd suggest giving Volume 1 a pass, I can recommend that you pick up Volume 2.

This is another book that I found stashed in my review pile that I'm working hard to get through. As a lover of a well written short story who is also on a busy schedule, I thought this one would be perfect. I could read a bit and stop when I needed to. I can be smart when I want to. ;)

As for this book in particular, honestly, I was left a bit disappointed. Of the 10 stories in the book, only 2 felt completed. The others felt far too open ended, as if the author had started something larger, got bored with it and just left it how it was. What's there is enjoyable, but from the first story in the book, I was left hanging and after a couple of these, it becomes a rather uncomfortable feeling. I'm hoping for better luck with volume 2 which is next up in the stack.

After finishing Doctor Diablo and enjoying it a ton, it wasn't difficult to go to my review shelf and pull down the other book that I had by Mr. Martin. I had high hopes and I wasn't disappointed. This book was another easy reader. The story held my attention from beginning to end and honestly, I keep hoping to hear that the author has done additional books that expand not only on this world and the characters, but also that of Doctor Diablo.  The author has a way of telling stories that would delight those of any age. The universes that he creates are not only realistic, but could easily be expanded upon. If you like sci-fi, androids, robots, superheroes, comics or any combination, this is another book that you should be looking for.

Poisons...antidotes...Seriously action packed and a book that I couldn't put down. I loved every single segment of this series and I honestly can't wait to convince the boys that they ought to give it a try. Granted, they're not the readers that their mom is but I do manage to sneak one their way from time to time. My advice to all of my readers? Don't let the fact that this book is geared towards the young adult crowd stop you from picking it up. Adults and young adults are going to love this book and I wouldn't be surprised at all if it's already on the Amazon top 100 or even top 10 list for this category. 

As for me, I'm thrilled to have found a new writer that I'm going to be watching for in the future!

Remember how great I said the full book was and then how I said the same thing about Part 1? Well, that hasn't changed for Part 2. The book is still fast paced, exciting and full of adventure. Honestly, I'm thinking about assigning my boys each a book to read over the course of the summer and I think my youngest is going to get handed this one. It's right up his alley. After all, who can resist reading about the Borg? Well, he's a teenage boy so he could just to be persnickety, but I have a sneaking suspicion that he's going to start reading this and then he'll keep reading it because it's just that good and honestly, if you can get a kid who is generally a non-reader to sit and read, you know the book just has to be good.

What?!? It's over?!? This is the final segment?!? Seriously, I have enjoyed this series as much as anyone of any age could. The characters are fun, the pacing is fantastic and the graphics? C'mon, you know they're wonderful and I'm betting that there are fans of this series who would love to get their fingers on some prints for their walls. I have to say that the ending was a bit of a surprise, but an ending it was. There are no cliffhangers, but I sure hope that doesn't mean that Brent is done writing. Personally, I'm looking forward to any/all books that he comes out with in the future.

I cannot believe that this series is almost over! With his amazing graphics and action packed storytelling, Brent has kept me captivated for this entire series. His imagination pulls you in and before you know it, another segment of the story is done and you're eagerly awaiting the next one. Sadly, for this series, the next one will be the final one. Fingers crossed that he doesn't stop writing though! I want to learn about new worlds, new creatures and chuckle some more at the funny acronyms that he comes up with. Honestly, with his amazing grasp on how to write dialogue and ways to share his technical knowledge without boring the reader, I think children and adults could and will enjoy his stories for years to come.

Just when I'm ready to say that science-fiction isn't really my thing, along comes a book that proves me wrong yet again. Guy Erma & the Son of Empire, while geared towards teens, certainly didn't let this grown up down. Filled with a brand new world and all sorts of new characters, I had a hard time putting this book down. Honestly, if you enjoy sci-fi, then this could be the perfect rainy day afternoon read for you. That, or plan on staying up late because you're not going to want to put it down until the very end.

I read the first book in this series and nearly had a heart attack when it was a cliffhanger. Then, I received this one and I devoured it in one night. Thank goodness it was a quiet night so I could start earlier! I haven't had near enough sleep lately and this one would have kept me up all night. This book is filled with mystery, action, adventure and yes, even a little bit of romance. Of course, it's another cliffhanger, but the series is so good (and so outside of my normal genre) that I can forgive it! Fingers crossed that the next part finds my desk soon!

Aoléon and Gilbert receive a special mission from PAX, a wanted criminal and leader of the Martian resistance movement to investigate the Luminon of Mars, who he suspects is planning an invasion of Earth to steal its milk cows. Gilbert has an encounter with the Luminess (the mate of the Luminon) and discovers something strange about her during a procession, and the duo are chased by the Royal Paladin Guard.

After class, Gilbert and Aoléon get to train in zero-G and Gilbert is treated to a Psi-ball match between Martian Space Academy and Martian Science Academy.

Brent is back with part two of this series and if you loved part one, you're going to love part 2 even more. The story continues to move along and this time, we're introduced to life on Mars as Aeleon knows it. Just like in the first part, the illustrations are beautifully done in a style that fits perfectly in with the story. I will say though that they really need to be seen in color to be fully appreciated, so if you're trying to read this on a black and white e-reader, check it out on your computer. You'll be glad that you did. Honestly, I could go on and on about how great the dialogue is, how fun the story is, and that's all true but what I want to say is go and get this series...if you'll have any complaint is that you have to wait for the next segment to come out.

Holy bajeezus, what did I get myself into with this book? I've loved Pauline's writing in the past, so when this book was offered to me, description unseen, I jumped on it. Little did I know that I was getting myself into an end of days, aliens, zombies, scare myself to death kind of book! As with all of her other books, Pauline's control of imagery is outstanding. The book keeps moving and I keep putting it down to take a few deep breathes before my curiosity demands that I pick it back up and keep reading. If you are at all into any of the above, don't hesitate, pick up Sanctuary.

Learning can be fun and this book is perfect for that. Filled with super fun illustrations and a story that keeps moving, you and your kids might just fall in love with this book series. Just don't tell them that they may be learning along the way! While the book says that it's geared towards middle-grade readers, I would put it more at an upper elementary age group. It's a bit simplistic for my middle schooler and some of the words would be too complex for the early elementary crowd. Since the book is about 94 pages long, I think that it would be perfect for those early chapter book readers. The story is fun and fast paced and before you know it, you'll be asking when the second installment comes out.

About the author:

My main loves are writing, painting and singing. I began work as a PA but to my joy was spotted by an agent in London and had an exciting career as a singer, meeting and singing with some wonderful people. Singing meant a lot of travelling both in the UK and abroad. At one time, I toured Germany and Turkey singing for the American troops, which was a fantastic experience. But then, my husband and I wanted a family, so I said good-bye to the singing career, although I did the occasional gig. Having children is such a precious time, and I would say to anyone, treasure it, it goes so quickly and before you know it, you’re waving them off to Uni or pursuing their own dreams and their own homes. I have always had a deep interest in psychology for various reasons, and especially the area of neurosis arising from abuse. Later, I was to study how we could use our body, mind and spirit to relieve pain and overcome some life-threatening diseases. One important thing here is, I always told my patients to continue with medical treatment along with the complementary and spiritual methods, for I believe medical research and medication is also a gift from God, Spirit or the Universe, as each of us wishes to name it. I have loved writing from a child and during the years of study, research and treating some wonderful people, whom I called my friends, I would write at night, mainly short stories, and reams of poetry. I wanted to learn how to write self-help books for my clients, so I took creative writing courses at university, which led to writing a novel. So self-help novels turned to fiction but even so, I hope the novels help the reader through their own challenges, as the characters experience love, loss, passion, jealousy, illness, joy and conflict, even the threat of death.

I'm honestly not sure what to say about this book. For some reason, it just didn't click with me and no matter how hard I try, I can't quite figure out why. The writing was good, the characters were well flushed out and the story moved at a good pace. Nope. I still can't put my finger on what it was that didn't work for me. I'm pretty sure this is the vaguest, most useless review I've ever written, but bear with me and hopefully we'll get through it together.

As I said, the characters are well flushed out. As a cyborg, Ben really seems more human than machine but that's really the point behind this whole book. I'm not going to spoil it for you, just say that you'll see if you read it. Lucy is an interesting character and her love for her pets made me smile more than once. Together, well that's one interesting combination...

The story starts a bit slow but quickly picks up pace. I did find that had a tough time keeping track of the various victims and which one was which. I did like the parts where they interacted with one another and I felt like that side of things was missing towards the end of the book. It's almost as if their perspective was forgotten and now that I think about it, we never did find out what happened to all of them. I also would have liked to have seen more of the viewpoint of the bad guys. I know that the whole point was for the police to figure out who was behind these crimes, but the work that the bad guys were doing was really interesting and you only get glimpses of it at the end.

All in all, I'm going to say this is a pretty good read for anyone interested in police drama, sci-fi and futuristic books with a bit of romance thrown in.

Darkness can be overcome…

Terminally ill Lynette Lamb is forced to reunite her wayward son and grandson. Her options are as limited as her strength and mobility. I have mixed feelings about this book. I was loving it, couldn't stop turning pages and then it changed for me. I think my troubles come in that I wasn't expecting this book to take a Christian turn. It threw me off and while the book was still really good, I just wasn't as into it. That being said, I suspect that it's one that I'm going to return to and now knowing that element is involved, I'm going to be far more into it than I was on my first go round. All in all, another recommended book that I certainly wouldn't stop you from getting a copy of.
