Everyone loves a noir style murder mystery type book, right? Maybe? Well, if not, you really don't know what you're missing. You ought to check out the genre and let me give you a good place to start.

The Good: The story. Honestly, I let this one sit in the magic review bag for a while since I wasn't sure how much I'd enjoy it. That was my mistake. I picked up this book to waste some time while waiting for football practice to start. Don't tell my youngest, but I missed some of his practice because I didn't put it down until I was done.

The Bad: The first panels show our characters already in a situation. This could throw or put some people off.

The Summary: If you're looking for an old fashioned, black and white, what's going to happen next type story, this is one that you're going to want to look into getting your fingers on. It's gritty. It's paranoia blended with panic to take you on a trip that you hope you survive until the end.

I honestly can't remember if I was convinced to purchase this book or if the author graciously gave me a copy for the purpose of this review. I will, however, state that the fact that a box of cheezy bread got left on this book, causing it to smell delicious, had nothing to do with anything positive in this review. Let me start out by saying that this book is adult only. If you can't read it, that's what the tiny white box on the picture says. These books are violent, sexual and have all sorts of language. Now, don't go saying you weren't warned.

The Good : I love the art in these books. It has a very round shape to it which I know sounds like a load of nonsense but somehow that's what I think when I look at it. I like that they're bold. The covers all read like social commentary with topics of a big bad corporation and school massacres, but that's really just the tip of the iceberg. You start reading and before you know it's you're on the last page going wow..what just happened there?

The Bad : These are adult so I have to hide these from the 11 year old who is going to see these covers and want to pick them up. In all seriousness, I don't really have any complaints when it comes to these books.

The Summary : If you're an adult, like zombies, whodunits, whatjusthappenedtheres or just a really cool comic book, I'm going to suggest you go track this series down. I've read the first 3 in what I believe will be a series of 12 books and with any luck, I'll be bringing you future updates. However, I will warn you that if sex, violence or profanity is not your thing, you're not going to like these books. They will probably be offensive and we don't want anyone offended. That's bad. These books are good. Books=Good, Offended=Bad. Got it? Good. ;)

I feel as if it's been forever since I've posted a comic book review and I am thrilled to say that I have a fantastic one to share with you today!

"A Tale of Epic Proportions launches this modern SCI-FI Adventure.

Yep! Sci-Fi, not zombies or vampires or even super hot bikini clad girls! Not that I dislike any of those, but I was just super excited to read something different from everything else I've been seeing lately.

The Good:
The story line. This first book in the trilogy covers quite a bit of back story and once I started reading it, I honestly found it hard to put down. Learning what really happened to the dinosaurs and how humans came to exist from this writer's point of view caught my attention in the first part and kept me going right up until Jenny...well, I'm not going to spoil it for you.

The Bad :
Ok, I don't know if this is bad or just different, but the publisher on this book chose to quite literally take the first four issues and put them into a new cover. I know what you're thinking. This is a trade. Trades do that. You're right, except the interior covers don't usually still have their bar codes and individual issue pricing on them. I'll be honest and say it seemed a bit lazy to me. It wouldn't have taken much effort to remove those. My only other complaint is that the front cover of the trade is exactly the same as issue 1's cover which you immediately notice because opening the front cover, you're faced with issue 1's cover. I would have liked to have seen an original cover done for the trade.

The Summary :
If you're into Sci-Fi and the age old story of good vs evil, an evil bad guy against a band of misfits or a brand new story of creation, this book is one you're going to want to add to your collection. It's one that when I first picked it up, I wasn't sure and then I started turning pages and it just pulled me in. From the story to the art, there wasn't anything to disrupt the flow and before I knew it, I had found the end and possibly whimpered out loud that I don't have volumes 2 or 3 so I can find out what happens next. Maybe if I'm a very lucky girl, I'll have a chance to review those for you as well. Keep your fingers crossed!

It's the start of another insane week and I wanted to be sure to get y'all this review before it gets started! This is another book that I picked up in Chicago and I have to say that the lovely lady who handed it to me was indeed lovely. She was someone who you could just tell was totally passionate about what she did. Those are the people who I love working with.

The Good : The artwork in this book is absolutely gorgeous. From the pencils (Mike Krome/Dawn McTeigue) to inks (Dawn McTeigue) to colors (Sabine Rich), it just comes together in such a way to powerfully back the fantastic story that JP Roth has put together.


The Bad : My copy of issue #0 got kind of beat up while waiting in the "Magic Review Bag." This is 99% my fault but I'm going to say the other 1% is due to the lack of a 3rd staple in the middle of the spine. Yep, that's the worst thing I can come up with.

The Summary :  Seriously, this book is totally worth looking into picking up. The story is one that draws you in and you want to know what happens next. The artwork is gorgeous. Run, spring, sign up for a marathon and go find this book. With any luck, I'll be back later to tell all of you about upcoming issues because this is one I'm putting on my follow this book list.

I know you're going to fall over in shock, but I have discovered the secret to being productive...are you ready for this? You have to do things! Woah, I know..freakishly frightening, right? I discovered that if you do things, things get done and that leaves you time to do other things..like read comic books!

This pretty awesome looking book is another that some brave soul trusted me with after meeting me in Chicago at C2E2.  I say brave because let's face it, these books are someone's baby. Handing them to me must be like sending your kid off to school and waiting for that first conference where you pray you hear that your child is a genius.

So, let me fill you in on the latest book in my kindergarten class:

Star Crossed is an ongoing science fiction space adventure. The series takes place 500 years after a massive interstellar plague outbreak that nearly wiped out the galactic population and revolves around Captain Joseph Cull, an independent mercenary working for a galaxy spanning government known as the ARC. His mission is to hunt down and destroy the many pirate clans throughout the galaxy. Joined by a crew of outcasts and rogues, Cull travels the galaxy finding pirate strongholds and new worlds to explore.

Now, for my take on things:

The Good : It's not about zombies. Ok, I'm kidding. Well, yes and no. It's not about zombies but really that's not what makes it an interesting read. What makes this book different is that it's not another zombie or superhero book. It's a book set in outer space with a hard brash captain leading a group of misfits. The cover drew me in from the first time I saw it. I love the layout and the way the colors make the image pop from the page.

The Bad : Sadly, I think this is a book that could have used some color. The interior pages are done in black and white and there are times when I struggled to figure out just what was happening. Most of the time this wasn't an issue, but through out the whole book, I was wishing for a bit of color.

The Summary : If you're looking for something different, something that isn't about zombies, werewolves or vampires, this very well could be the book for you. It has an ongoing story line that promises to keep you on the edge of your seat waiting to see what adventures/mis-adventures the captain will lead his crew into next. All in all, a pretty good book that works well for that teen/adult set.

It's been a while since I've had what I'm going to call a difficult review. Sadly, that's what this one has turned out to be. Let me start out by saying that this is a brand new comic book company and clearly, they're having growing pains. Since we've all been there from time to time, you know I'm going to take it easy on these guys.

I met these folks back at C2E2 and they were really nice. Ok, I confess, it certainly didn't hurt when their writer wrote Stay Beautiful on the cover of the book to me. Granted, he might have done this for every pretty girl who came along, but I'm going to believe that it wasn't because I'm a reviewer but...Ok, it might have been. If memory serves, I saw these guys on Sunday when I looked and probably acted one step above a zombie...lol!

Folks, I tried looking online for a copy of the cover of this book or a synopsis, but they just weren't to be found. So, instead, I'm going to jump right into the good, the bad, the summary.

The Good : The art work in this book is really pretty cool. It's well drawn and the colors just pop from the pages. The story of good vs evil, including the descendants of the Four Horsemen is an intriguing one.

The Bad : This book is chock full of grammatical errors and some spelling mistakes. Y'all know this is a pretty big pet peeve for me. As a baby book, I'm willing to give it a chance to grow but it's not going to without a good editor reviewing the pages for this sort of thing.

The Summary : Keep your eyes open for Fantum Breed Entertainment. They have a lot of potential. As for this particular book, I would hold off purchasing it until there's a new printing with the grammar issues fixed. It has serious potential to turn into an awesome series, so don't write it off.

Sadly, I can't point you in any direction when it comes to learning more about these guys or their books. They have a website but it's little more than a holding page at this point. They're also on Facebook, but you have to friend request them. It's not a fan page. As such, I don't feel comfortable handing out that information.

As for me, I'm going to keep my eyes and ears open for these guys. It's one baby comic book company that I feel has the potential to grow up into something really cool.

It's not often that a cover will draw me in to the point that I actually purchase the book without doing a bit of homework first. Of course, when you're walking the convention floor, meeting, greeting and networking, there's not a lot of time for homework of any sort. Enter, this book. I walked up to the table with the intent on giving my little sales pitch and instead walked away a bit lighter in the pocket but with a brand new book for the boys and I to check out. Either I need to get stronger or stop taking money with me to these things! Some of those folks are serious salesmen! I do have to say though that if you're passionate about your project, that will draw in a reviewer like me faster than anything. More than once, I've agreed to review a project I wasn't sure about simply because the person behind the table was so passionate about it. This author..well, he was passionate and after reading this book, I can see why.

First..our synopsis:

The Crimson Battle Axe, a sword-and-sorcery hero story about justice versus vengeance, love versus apathy, forgiveness versus bitterness, and good versus evil. Throughout the story, tough choices must be made by the main characters - they must choose the right path while constantly challenged by doubts and dark forces working against them. Through fantastic battles and tender moments, with humor and unlikely friendship, five travelers follow their destiny on an amazing quest.


Now, onto the review!

The Good : This book is one that you'll pick up and just keep reading. If I'd had the time, I think I would have read it straight through on the first run. The characters are interesting and let me tell you that the one monster that they fight had me going wow, where can I get one of those? I promise to only use it for good, but where can I find one?

The Bad : There is a lot of focus on descriptions. While this really does help visualize what is happening in the book, sometimes it was just a little bit too much. I felt as if some of the character descriptions could have been broken up a bit throughout the book and details introduced to readers as they went along.

The Summary : This book is one that is not only geared towards action/adventure/fantasy loving kids of around my boys' ages, but one that adults can enjoy as well. It's one that I intend to add to our reading shelf for those hot summer nights when the boys laze around and I read to them. I have a feeling that they're going to love meeting Gnarl, Garon, Hailstriker and the others.

I know it's been a while since I've brought you a review, but have no fear, I'm back with something new and different for you. Strap on your what the heck seat belts and prepare yourself for God the Dyslexic Dog. According to their website, this book summarizes as:

What if everything you believed was reversed? Inverted?

My take on it? Well, let's break it down like we always do.

The Good: Different. That's the first thing that comes to mind every time I've picked up this book. In all the books that I've read for fun or for a review (which is also fun, I admit), I've not picked up a single book like this. There were no zombies or vampires or super heroes. Just pages and pages of what the heck is going on now.

The Bad: I found this book just the tiniest bit difficult to follow, but I am going to be up front and say that I read this very late at night when my brain was probably not at its best. The second night I picked it up, I was far more awake and I didn't have that problem at all. So, the bad? Don't read it when you're tired and can't focus on the story line.

The Summary: If you're into something that's a bit out of the norm and has some really cool artwork, this book may be something you want to track down. I loved the mention of sciency things mixed with mythology and all combined into a mixture of the creation story and the gods of man.

This was the first trade paperback for this series. It's come to my attention that there is a second one. I'm hoping to be able to review it for you and let y'all know about the series as a whole. No promises though!

Oh Chicago..the city that sent me home loads of reviews and a few new friends to boot. I will forever look upon that trip with fondness. I was beyond tired but at the same time, the people there treated me so well. I'm seriously considering making up a con listing for cons I want to continue or try to attend and Chicago will be on that list for 2013.

So, enough about me. I should probably tell you about the book, eh? This was one of the very few books that I actually paid real actual money for. Yep, that's right. This guy was so smooth (and I was so tired) that he actually talked me into not only purchasing the book but also reviewing it. Those of you who know me from the "business" point of view know that he pulled off a major coup.

The Synopsis:

Staying the entire summer at her eccentric grandmother's po-dunk farmhouse isn't Betty's idea of a good time.  But things soon go from bad to worse when renegade necromancers and exiled chaos demons begin invading her dreams, and then her reality.  Suddenly, making new friends, the local bully and the haunted woods out back are the least of her worries...

What's a girl to do?

Join Betty, a cross dimensional bundle of trouble, as she enlists with a secret group of warriors known as the Soul Chasers.  With her new partner, Rolf, she'll learn to fight back against the forces of darkness that are bent on shattering the barrier between the world we know and the dark land of dream.

Will she be able to wield the true power of a Soul Chaser?  Or will this be the worst summer vacation ever?


The Good - 
This is one of those stories that you'll pick up and go hmm..then you'll turn another page and another page and another page and before you know it, you'll have read through 167 pages and the book is all done. I should know. Before last night, I'd only read the first 50 pages or so. Last night, I picked this back up and didn't put it back down until I read through the entire story, concept art and the biography about the author. The art, combined with the story line, pulls you in. Did I mention that the art and story were both done by the same guy? The book is done entirely in black and white, yet his grey scale is what sets this apart from so many of the other black and white books that I've seen lately.

The Bad -
My one and only complaint comes from the mommy point of view. While I don't recall it ever being stated in the book, my guess is that Betty is perhaps 16 or 17 years old. There is a mention at the end of the book about her going to school with two other characters in the Fall and that she's staying with her grandmother because her parents are getting divorced. This leads me to believe that she's not old enough to be living on her own. Considering that, I found it concerning that the author/artist felt the need to draw Betty wearing some pretty scanty outfits in a couple of sections of the book.

The Summary -
Another good book from someone out of the Chicago area. If Phoenix isn't careful, they're going to have a rival in my really cool place comic folk come from theory. This one retails for $14.95 but at its size, it's well worth the price. Soul Chaser Betty will pull you in, waiting to see if this teenage girl can save us all from certain doom. Is it just me or is it fun to say certain doom? It might just be me. What isn't just me is the love for a redheaded girl with a kick butt weapon. How do I know this? I just do because I know that if you go and pick this book up, you're going to love it too.


I actually purchased a copy of this book for the purpose of this review! Can you believe that? The author on this book is a great salesman plus I was falling over tired when I approached his table. Warning, it's like going to the grocery store while hungry..avoid this man if you're tired and have money to spend! Just kidding...kinda! Go on..go buy this book. You can thank me later.

I feel like I've been totally slacking. I still have a good sized pile of reviews to bring to y'all but I've needed a bit of a break to focus on some other things happening in my life. I'll have to fill y'all in but not right now. Right now, I need to tell you about this really cute book that was given to me at C2E2.

According to Amazon, this lovely gem's description reads:

I think y'all already know how I feel about this book, but here's the rundown:

The Good - There's so much that's good about this book. It's laid out in a Sunday comic format which is great. It means you can sit and read the whole book or you can read one or two and come back to pick it up later. The artist's work is fantastic. It's not overdone but you never have any doubt as to what's happening. The story lines are cute and fun. They're not so overdone that one of my boys wouldn't be able to understand but they're not dropped down to such a level that I couldn't enjoy it.

The Bad - Crud. It's rare that I can't find some fault with a book. Usually I've caught a grammatical error or a problem with the art. Something. This time, I'm stumped. The only bad thing..I wish I had a volume 2. There you go. That's all I can come up with.

The Summary - I really like this book. I like that it's family friendly. I like that the characters are real. All in all, I just like this book. It's one that you won't regret finding and buying. It's one that you'll probably come back to more than once and chuckle. It's just plain fun and shouldn't comics be fun? So, head on over to their site or Amazon and get your order in today. It's been quite a while since I've done a book review, so I was really excited to receive a copy of this book this past weekend at C2E2. Originally, I had planned on leaving this review for later but somehow, this book ended up in my fingers and once I started reading it, I couldn't put it back down.

For those of you who have never heard of this book, let me provide you with the synopsis : Growing up as a nerd in a small midwestern town, Liza didn't have the easiest life. Then she met her idol, the Paragon, the super powered man whose poster she kept over her bed. By accident they traded places. Liza's life didn't get any easier.

Nerd - Small Midwestern Town - Nah, I can't relate to that at all, right? Actually, I guess I could which is why I was initially drawn to this book. I could empathize with the main character. She's someone who is easy to identify with. I think, in her, we can all find some piece of ourselves. 


You guys know how these reviews work...ready?


The Good - The book is an easy read. I finished it over the course of a few days and that was in very broken up chunks due to kids and other things that required my time and attention. The story, while recommended for adult audiences, isn't complex. You're not going to get lost or bogged down in details. What you are going to do is cheer on Liza as she tackles some very difficult situations that she's been unwillingly placed in. You're also going to want more. While this book wraps up this part of Liza's life, you're going to be left wanting to know what happens to her after this. How does she adjust to her new life when all is said and done? I think that's the sign of a well written book. If I want more, then it captured my imagination.


The Bad - Y'all know that I have a pet peeve about grammar and proofing your work. Y'all also know that sometimes my brain gets ahead of my fingers and I end up with some rather creative typos and words in places that they don't belong. However, I'm not selling my work. If I were, you could be dang sure that I'd have a team of proof readers. This book could have used just one more proofreader. Throughout the book, I would find the occasional spelling/typo goof, like the use of the word buss instead of bus. I also found the incorrect use of the word you're throughout. 


The Summary - Even though there were some grammatical issues, this book really was one that I couldn't put down. Grammatical issues are easily fixed before further printings. A bad story isn't. I would recommend that you give this book a try. You might just find you enjoy it.

Sunday, bloody Sunday...See? Inner dj is still on! There was no blood, I swear! Ok, there might have been but it wasn't real blood! It was makeup blood and it wasn't on me! There were tons of cosplayers with tons of fake blood on them. I don't have any pictures, so you'll just have to trust me that it happened.

I woke up waaaay too early this morning. It was probably close to 2am before I went to sleep and I woke up probably six times overnight and finally gave up and got up at 8:30. This meant that I was packed up and checked out of the hotel by 9am. After a quick stop at the gift shop for a couple of shirts for the boys, I dragged a luggage cart upstairs to the room, packed everything on it and then dragged it alllll the way out to the van and loaded it up. I caught the 9:20am shuttle and was at the convention center by around 10:30. Then, the great hunt for an atm machine began! I couldn't believe it, but a Sheraton hotel didn't have an atm on sight and I didn't want to walk 2 blocks down to a gas station so I figured there'd be one at the convention center. There was! Except the first one I tried was plum out of cash! Luckily, someone told me where there was another one, so I stood in line at that one and pulled my spending money for the day.

Then, it was back up to the floor to make my first purchase of the day. It's pretty rare that I purchase review items, but something about this had caught my attention and I decided to take a risk on it. What did I buy (once I tracked the guy down...) ? I bought this:

It was about 11:20am by that time (yeah, it took me a while to find that atm and then this guy!), so I decided to go sit in line for the one and only panel that I attended this weekend. Of course, I got up there and realized that it was only 11:25 and the room had another panel in it for another 20 minutes! So, I sat down on the floor and got comfy up against a wall with another girl. While sitting there, I snagged these pictures with my phone:

After the talk, I headed back to the floor. I stopped and talked with some of the great people that I had met the day before. I even had one really cute guy tell me that he wished he'd known I'd been on my own for dinner because they would have asked me along. That made me feel pretty good. I made my way back to Artist Alley because I'd missed it the day before. 

Saturday in the park...no wait. I seem to have the inner dj turned on and I was never in a park this weekend. Let's just start over, shall we? Saturday was what I tend to call omg busy. I was up by 9 and considering Friday was tiring and I didn't get to bed til 2am, I was concerned with that. I did the usual post-waking things..showered, dressed, ate a banana and then I was off to the convention center!

Yet again, I caught the shuttle to the airport and then it was off to the train! This time, I wasn't alone but got to spend the entire ride with Phil (dad), Connor (son - about 13) and this adorable little girl whose name escapes me, but she had a stuffed wolf named Sammy. Phil was in town from Indianapolis and the kids were up from Kentucky for the weekend. We had a great time talking and hanging out. So great that I gave them one of my cards and Connor said he was going to add me on Facebook. I hope that they do. I really liked them.

Then, it was off to the next shuttle. This time, it was totally packed. In fact, about 30 people were left standing on the curb. Yeesh! I got to the convention center and it was absolutely packed! There were people everywhere which is great for the convention, to be sure. I had intended on taking a lot of pictures but I only had 2 hands and carrying my camera in one of them got old pretty quick and I'm weird and don't like wearing it around my neck. I always feel like a tourist and on a day where I'm trying to be professional, tourist just doesn't blend. I did take a few right at the beginning though...



Then, it was up to the 3rd floor where it was even more jam packed with people! I stopped by Big Dog Ink to say hi and then started making my way around the exhibitor booths. This was my very first time saying, "Hi, my name is Katrina and I'm here looking for new people and companies to work with." I don't know if it was the press badge or the super cheeriness, but it seemed to work! I had a great time talking with people and quite a few of them either handed me their "babies" to review or promised to send me digital copies.  At one table, I bumped into Ralph Tedesco  and you know dang well that I made sure to give him my card. I also asked him about a couple of titles and if they had them with them. Not only did they have them, but he encouraged me to stop by and he'd *give* me them for Roger to review (they're children's titles).

It took me probably a few more hours, but I did find my way to their table and got to meet Stephen, head marketing god for Zenescope. It was nice to put a face with a name and hopefully, he felt the same way. While standing there, I kept answering questions for others coming up to the table. I can't help it. I'm a helper and I really do love their product. Who knows, maybe if I'm helpful enough, they'll hire me to do something..lol! Ralph came back to the table while I was standing there and between my love of their books and his generosity, I think I walked away with 5 trade paperbacks for myself and 3 trades and a preview issue of Jurassic Strike Force for Roger. These guys might not have given me much re-posting love before this but they sure treated me well that day. I'm looking forward to continuing my relationship with them.

I think it must have taken me about 5 hours, but I did finish making my way around the exhibitor floor about 5:45pm and I went and hung out at the Big Dog Ink table. I hope it didn't bug Tom that I was hanging around, talking with Nei. I did spend some time pitching their books to people who came up and I did make at least one artist commission happen. I also took around some of their Vote Independent posters to a couple of other booths. I think it would be rather brilliant of them if they created postcard sized pieces for that campaign and considering I'll be hitting the Phoenix Comicon floor hard in another month, it'd be something I could hand out when I'm talking about it with other independent artists/companies. I wished more than once this past weekend that I had something like that with me.

Somewhere around 6:45, I decided I ought to head back to the hotel since nobody had extended me another dinner invite. Shuttle, train and shuttle later, I made my way into the room where I decided I just couldn't move another step unless I absolutely had to. So, in true fancy schmancy press/princess style, I called room service and had a lovely bed picnic while talking to Justin and Eric. Sleep ended up taking over (after these two old men fell asleep, I have to say..and it was 2 hours earlier for them!) and day 2 came to a close.

Scene: One tired girl curled up on a huge bed, drifting off to sleep with a smile on her face because people liked her and want to work with her...camera pans to see lots of comic books and other goodies from the day... *giggles*
